State Street Joins JPMorgan’s Blockchain-Based Debt Platform

State Street has officially joined JPMorgan’s Digital Debt Service as its first outside custodian. The move enables the custodian to hold blockchain-based debt for institutional clients. The step aligns with the financial industry’s increasing adoption of tokenized real-world assets.

The $100 million tokenized commercial debt came from Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation. OCBC, based in Singapore, issued the debt in the platform’s debut transaction. The tokenized debt functions within JPMorgan’s permissioned blockchain framework.

JPMorgan’s platform is part of its Kinexys blockchain division. This unit, launched in 2024, evolved from its Onyx initiative. It supports issuance, trading, and settlement of digital versions of government and corporate bonds.

Growing Institutional Interest in Tokenized Assets

The tokenized real-world asset (RWA) market is accelerating rapidly. Data from RWA.xyz shows it expanded by 65% in 2025. The market value now exceeds $26.4 billion, excluding stablecoins.

Institutions are responding with increased participation in platforms like JPMorgan’s. State Street’s involvement reflects a shift toward regulated digital finance. Its backing adds significant weight to the tokenization trend.

State Street manages $5.1 trillion in assets and holds $49 trillion in custody. It joins JPMorgan to provide infrastructure for institutional blockchain adoption, signaling readiness for broader integration.

JPMorgan Expands Kinexys and Blockchain Partnerships

JPMorgan launched Kinexys to scale tokenized asset operations. It has since partnered with firms such as Chainlink and Ondo Finance. These collaborations aim to connect traditional and blockchain financial systems.

Earlier this year, JPMorgan completed test transfers of tokenized U.S. Treasurys across chains. Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov said tokenization improves capital efficiency. He added it brings high-quality assets and payment systems on-chain.

Nazarov said in June,

“Tokenization improves capital efficiency while anchoring value to blockchain networks. “

JPMorgan sees blockchain as a tool to modernize debt infrastructure. Kinexys supports these goals through compliant and interoperable blockchain platforms.

Regulatory Pushback as Tokenization Gains Momentum

While adoption grows, concerns are rising among some market players. Citadel Securities recently warned the SEC about unregulated growth in tokenized securities. The firm urged caution, citing risks to traditional market structures.

Citadel expressed concern about fragmented liquidity and access issues. It noted that institutional investors could struggle with decentralized trading venues. The firm emphasized that improvements must be structural, not regulatory arbitrage.

In response, policymakers like Paul Atkins have suggested modernizing securities laws. One proposal includes an “innovation exemption” to streamline product launches. Atkins compared the shift to tokenization with the transition from CDs to digital audio.

Summary

State Street has become the first external custodian on JPMorgan’s tokenized debt platform. The $100 million transaction with OCBC highlights rising institutional confidence in blockchain-based finance. JPMorgan’s Kinexys unit continues to advance tokenized debt issuance. While firms like Citadel call for regulation, the trend toward real-world asset tokenization is gaining speed among global institutions.
