Just as decentralized finance (DeFi) appeared to be regaining momentum, another string of crypto bridge hacks has put security risks back in the open. According to latest reports, three separate attacks have drained more than $35.5 million from DeFi protocols within a single day, reviving concerns that bridge vulnerabilities stays as one of the industry’s weakest links.

Although the losses are far smaller than the multibillion-dollar exploits that have rocked the sector in previous years, it is still unsettling for investors.

DeFi had only recently begun recovering, with total value locked (TVL) climbing in July after months of subdued activity. The latest incidents now raise questions about whether this renewed security concerns could slow that recovery before confidence fully returns.

Three Bridge Exploits Reveal a Persistent Weak Spot

The largest attack targeted AFX Trade, where attackers exploited its bridge infrastructure and stole approximately $24.15 million in USDC.

Blockchain security firm Blockaid said the compromise was isolated to AFX’s bridge not Arbitrum itself. The stolen assets were subsequently bridged to Ethereum and swapped into ETH.

The second-largest exploit struck VerusCoin’s Ethereum bridge, resulting in losses of roughly $7.5 million. Security researchers reported that the attacker abused the same vulnerability class previously exploited earlier this year, allowing unbacked payouts from bridge reserves before routing funds through Tornado Cash.

Meanwhile, BSquared Network also lost nearly $3.9 million after an attacker drained millions of B2 tokens before converting and bridging the proceeds across multiple networks.

While the affected protocols operate independently, the common denominator was cross-chain bridge infrastructure.

These systems are among the most technically complex components of DeFi because they rely on validators, messaging systems, liquidity pools, or smart contracts to transfer assets securely between blockchains.

That complexity has constantly made bridges the targets for sophisticated attackers.

DeFi Recovery Faces an Untimely Confidence Test

After months of cautious capital allocation, DeFi protocols began attracting fresh deposits in July as investor sentiment improved together with cryptocurrency market strength.

The rebound suggested users were becoming more comfortable locking capital back into decentralized applications following earlier security incidents.

However, history shows that security events often affect market psychology beyond the direct financial losses.

Large exploits tend to reduce user confidence, discourage new deposits, and increase scrutiny of protocol risk management even when unaffected platforms remain secure.

The latest crypto bridge hacks incidents therefore ascertain that bridge infrastructure continues to represent one of DeFi’s biggest systemic risks.

Previous academic research has consistently identified cross-chain bridges as a major attack surface due to their operational complexity and dependence on both on-chain and off-chain components.

Movement of Drift Exploit Funds Adds to Market Anxiety

Investor caution has also intensified after wallets linked to the earlier Drift Protocol exploit resumed moving stolen assets.

According to on-chain tracking shared by Onchain Lens, the attacker has been transferring ETH through Tornado Cash Router in repeated batches.

Although moving stolen funds does not necessarily indicate immediate selling activity, it places another high-profile exploit back into public discussion just as new attacks dominate headlines.

The combination of fresh bridge breaches and renewed activity from a previous exploit has created a perception that DeFi security risks are resurfacing simultaneously.

Even if the incidents are unrelated, overlapping headlines often influence sentiment more than fundamentals, particularly during periods when capital is only beginning to return to decentralized finance.

Why Security May Affect DeFi’s Next Phase More Than Price

Despite the recent exploits, the industry’s long-term trajectory has not changed.

Major DeFi developers have continued investing heavily in security audits, bug bounty programs, real-time monitoring tools, and bridge redesigns aimed at reducing validator and smart contract risks.

Many newer interoperability solutions are also moving toward intent-based architectures that reduce reliance on traditional liquidity bridges, reflecting lessons learned from years of bridge exploits.

Still, restoring confidence requires more than technical improvements.

Institutional participation in DeFi depends on predictable risk management, particularly as tokenized real-world assets and regulated financial products expand on blockchain networks.

Continued high-profile exploits could slow institutional adoption by bringing up concerns that infrastructure vulnerabilities remain unresolved.

If additional bridge exploits emerge, security could once again dominate market conversations. Conversely, if protocols demonstrate effective responses and no more contagion develops, the July TVL recovery may remain intact.

Conclusion

Crypto Bridge Hacks have once again switched the attention from DeFi’s growth prospects to its security challenges.

The more than $35.5 million lost across AFX Trade, VerusCoin, and BSquared Network is relatively modest compared with previous industry-wide exploits, but the incidents spell it out that cross-chain bridges are a persistent vulnerability.

For this to develop into another prolonged wave of DeFi fear will likely be a factor of how quickly affected protocols respond, if additional exploits follow, and if investor confidence continues supporting capital inflows across the decentralized finance ecosystem.

Glossary

Cross-Chain Bridge: Infrastructure that enables assets to move between different blockchain networks.

DeFi: Decentralized financial applications that operate through smart contracts without traditional intermediaries.

TVL (Total Value Locked): The total value of digital assets deposited across DeFi protocols.

Validator: A participant responsible for verifying transactions or approving bridge transfers.

Tornado Cash: A crypto privacy protocol designed to obscure transaction histories.

Bridge Exploit: An attack that targets vulnerabilities in cross-chain asset transfer infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crypto Bridge Hacks

Why are crypto bridge hacks notable?

Cross-chain bridges facilitate asset transfers between blockchains. Because they often secure large pools of assets and involve complex infrastructure, successful exploits can result in losses and weaken confidence across DeFi.

How much was stolen in the latest DeFi exploits?

The three reported attacks resulted in combined losses of approximately $35.55 million, with AFX Trade accounting for the largest share.

Did the latest exploits affect the entire DeFi ecosystem?

No. The attacks targeted individual protocols, but security incidents often influence broader investor sentiment because they highlight recurring infrastructure risks.

Could these hacks reduce DeFi TVL again?

If similar exploits continue, some users may withdraw funds or delay new deposits.
