While the cryptocurrency has held around the $64,000 region, the latest data shows that Bitcoin demand drivers such as institutional inflows, leveraged buying, and fresh on-chain capital are no longer providing the same support they did earlier in July.

Long-term Bitcoin holders continue to accumulate and hold their positions despite the recent pullback.  Their conviction has so far helped prevent a sharper decline, but the market is still unsure if that support can withstand additional selling pressure.

ETF Outflows Remove an Important Source of Buying Pressure

One of the main signs of cooling Bitcoin demand drivers has come from the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market.

According to Farside Investors data, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded four consecutive trading sessions of net outflows totaling more than $526 million between July 23 and July 28. Individual sessions included withdrawals of approximately $225.1 million, $240.1 million, $11.6 million, and $49.7 million, ending a period of stronger institutional participation.

While ETF flows remain one of the most important indicators of institutional sentiment, they should not be viewed alone. Daily creations and redemptions often reflect investor positioning established over previous trading sessions instead of immediate reactions to price movements.

Even so, consecutive outflows reduce an important source of spot-market demand. If withdrawals continue over an extended period, they could limit Bitcoin’s ability to sustain rallies above key resistance levels.

Derivatives Traders Are Becoming More Cautious

Looking at the derivatives market, Glassnode’s latest Week 31 Market Pulse found that aggressive buying in perpetual futures has weakened, while funding rates paid by long-position traders have cooled considerably.

Aggregate open interest has also edged higher instead of collapsing.

This implies that traders have not abandoned leveraged exposure. However, they appear to be adopting a more measured approach, using less aggressive leverage while waiting for stronger directional signals.

Options markets seem slightly different. Recent positioning indicates investors are buying fewer downside protection contracts than they were several weeks ago, implying that although sentiment has become cautious, expectations of an immediate sharp sell-off have eased.

The derivatives markets suggest uncertainty instead of outright bearishness, a notable factor for investors attempting to gauge near-term risk.

On-Chain Activity Suggests Fresh Capital Is Still Missing

Beyond ETFs and derivatives, blockchain data reveals that organic demand is still subdued.

Glassnode reported that active wallet addresses have remained relatively stable, meaning that network participation has not deteriorated significantly.

However, economic settlement activity, transaction demand, and capital inflows have remained muted, suggesting that new money has not yet returned to the market in meaningful size.

This is important because sustainable Bitcoin rallies typically require multiple demand sources to strengthen together.

ETF inflows provide institutional buying. On-chain activity reveals organic network usage. Derivatives markets reveal trader conviction.

When all three Bitcoin demand drivers weaken, price appreciation becomes more difficult, even if long-term fundamentals remain intact.

The current outlook therefore resembles consolidation not accumulation driven by expanding capital.

Long-Term Holders Continue to Provide Market Stability

Despite weaker short-term demand, one group continues to support Bitcoin’s price.

According to Glassnode, long-term holders have maintained their conviction, while aggregate unrealized losses have declined modestly and realized losses have eased. These show that experienced investors are showing little sign of panic selling despite recent volatility.

In past cycles, long-term holder behavior has played an huge role during periods of market uncertainty. When these investors continue holding or accumulating coins, they reduce the amount of Bitcoin available for sale, helping absorb temporary weakness from speculative traders.

However, given the situation of the market, that support is not unlimited.

If Bitcoin were to break below its recent trading range while long-term holders began increasing distribution, the market structure could deteriorate much more quickly than it has so far.

Why $64,000 Has Become Such an Important Level

The current test of Bitcoin $64K Support represents not just a psychological round number.

Recent trading has shown buyers consistently stepping in around this area after Bitcoin retreated from local highs near $66,700. Although price briefly recovered toward $65,100, momentum has remained insufficient to establish a sustained breakout.

IndicatorCurrent SignalMarket Implication
Spot Bitcoin ETFsFour consecutive net outflow sessionsInstitutional buying has weakened
Perpetual FuturesSofter buy-side aggressionTraders are reducing leverage
Funding RatesCoolingLower speculative conviction
On-Chain CapitalStagnantLimited fresh liquidity entering the market
Long-Term HoldersStill accumulatingProviding underlying price support

Markets are awaiting additional guidance from the U.S. Federal Reserve, while equity market weakness and geopolitical uncertainty have contributed to a more cautious risk environment.

Those factors have weighed on cryptocurrencies alongside declining ETF demand.

Conclusion

Although several demand indicators have weakened, the available evidence does not yet point to a breakdown.

Unlike previous sharp corrections, realized losses are still relatively contained, long-term holders continue demonstrating conviction, and derivatives positioning show caution instead of widespread capitulation. Those characteristics are generally associated with consolidation phases instead of the early stages of prolonged bear markets.

Although, Bitcoin still needs stronger participation from institutional investors, spot buyers, and on-chain users before a sustainable recovery can develop.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bitcoin Demand Drivers

Why is Bitcoin’s $64,000 level important?

The $64,000 area has become a key support zone where buyers have repeatedly entered the market after recent declines. Holding above this level could preserve Bitcoin’s consolidation structure.

Why are Bitcoin ETF outflows significant?

Spot Bitcoin ETFs represent an important source of institutional demand. Persistent outflows reduce buying pressure and can weigh on market sentiment, although they are only one indicator of institutional activity.

What are long-term holders?

Long-term holders are investors who have held Bitcoin for extended periods and are generally less likely to sell during short-term market volatility.

Does weaker on-chain activity mean Bitcoin is bearish?

Not necessarily. Subdued on-chain activity suggests fresh capital is limited, but it does not automatically indicate a bear market.

Glossary

Spot Bitcoin ETF: An exchange-traded fund that directly holds Bitcoin, allowing investors to gain exposure through regulated financial markets.

Long-Term Holder (LTH): A Bitcoin investor who has held coins for an extended period and shows lower selling activity.

Funding Rate: A periodic payment exchanged between long and short traders in perpetual futures markets that reflects market sentiment.

Open Interest: The total number of outstanding derivatives contracts that have not yet been closed.

Perpetual Futures: Crypto derivatives contracts without an expiry date that allow traders to use leverage.
