RTFKT, the digital fashion studio in Nike’s portfolio, said on Dec. 2 that it would be shutting down its Web3 services. The announcement signals the end of the company’s voyage into the Web3 space, with services officially winding down by the end of January 2025.
A statement thought to originate from the company was shared: gonna focus on maintaining their fame via a new site. This will act as a portfolio and a reminder of RTFKT’s impact on the digital fashion and blockchain space.
Recognizing Accomplishments in Blockchain and Digital Fashion
With a distinct focus on taking steps forward in digital fashion, gaming, and blockchain technology, RTFKT has consistently challenged creative limits. For its new transition, a new website will encompass its milestones, including collaborations with hit artists like Takashi Murakami and the development of digital to physical sneakers.
A Farewell Ripe with Promises to Collectors
While RTFKT used Discord to confirm that operations as a traditional Web3 company are coming to an end, the team reassured collectors that updates about collections, websites, and services will still be announced through official channels. For the final sonic touch on the musical roadmap, RTFKT has planned one release in December 2024—”MNLTH X featuring the BLADE DROP”—capping off what it sees as an era of integrated digital-physical experiences.
Adidas Advances with StepN Go Blockchain Step
While RTFKT is leaving Web3, Adidas is doubling down on the blockchain. The sportswear brand has teamed up with StepN Go for the second time to launch the Genesis Sneakers NFT collection powered by the Solana blockchain. The collaboration is an extension of their current partnership back to April 2024 that fuses fitness, fashion, and blockchain technology.
Genkins Exercise Shoes Exclusive Designer Collection
The Genesis Sneakers collection was introduced through a raffle mint on MOOAR, the NFT marketplace of StepN Go. Participants paid 10,000 GMT, StepN Go’s native token, to enter the raffle, with refunds issued for unsuccessful entries. Limited to just 1,000 pairs, the collection emphasizes exclusivity, appealing to both athletes and digital fashion enthusiasts who value rarity and high-end design in the blockchain space.
Changes in the Web3 Fashion Scene
RTFKT’s exodus from Web3 stands in stark contrast to Adidas’ attempts to grow its footprint, representing two approaches to digital fashion. Although RTFKT’s exit will no doubt leave a void, the fact that people are still getting involved, like Adidas, shows that opportunities for creativity and engagement in this space are still expanding. Brands are likely to evolve to accommodate new consumer behaviours, merging elements of both physical and digital experiences to reimagine engagement for a technology-enabled world.
